Our story

From Ted's Transfer to AAction Movers

In 1932, in the middle of the Great Depression, a small delivery outfit called Ted’s Transfer set up shop in Bismarck, North Dakota. It started out making small deliveries with a motorcycle and sidecar, backed by a strong work ethic and a city that needed things moved.

For twenty-five years Ted’s Transfer worked as an independent hauler. In 1957 the company became an agent for United Van Lines, and that partnership laid the foundation for everything that followed. Sometime in the 1960s, the family that owned the business renamed it AAction Movers. Two A’s, not one, to land at the top of the phone book. In the Yellow Pages era, that was like ranking first on Google, and it worked.

1975: veteran ownership begins

Steve Herman came from a modest, blue-collar family and joined the Air Force to put himself through college in Bismarck. After school he went to work for a competitor down the street. By then AAction was struggling, and when someone offered to sell it to him, Steve laughed. He didn’t have a penny to his name.

A local banker heard about it, took Steve to breakfast and, over a handshake, offered a 100% loan, as long as Steve’s father and father-in-law co-signed. Steve negotiated one more condition: if the company turned a profit in its first year, even a single dollar, the co-signers would come off the loan. He made it, barely, and AAction Movers was officially his.

Growing with our customers

Through the late 1970s Steve expanded across both Dakotas. In 1987 we made our first move into Arizona, opening in Phoenix, and today our Mesa warehouse covers 72,000 square feet. In 2005 the family added Go Mini’s portable storage, which is run as a separate company.

“He hardly made a dollar, but he made at least one. So he got to take their names off of it, and the company was officially his.”

Second generation

Scott Herman Takes the Wheel

Scott Herman, Steve’s son, spent 17 years in Arizona and never planned to join the family business. He built his own company there from the ground up and grew it across several states. In 2012 the family needed help with sales and marketing, which happened to be Scott’s strong suit, so he came aboard. A year later he moved from Phoenix to Bismarck to take over as President.

Scott brought a salesperson’s drive to an office that had gotten used to waiting for the phone to ring, and he learned the moving business from the ground up, including the complexity of interstate moves as a van line agent.

“A lot of people assumed that because of my last name, I knew everything about the moving business. I didn't know a thing. I'd never worked a day in this industry.”

— Scott Herman, President & CEO

Better before bigger

Scott’s rule for growth is simple: get better before getting bigger. Growth has to be earned, and it follows excellence instead of coming ahead of it. That’s also why we’ve diversified beyond household goods and military moves into commercial and corporate relocation, plus final mile delivery for businesses.

Loyalty runs deep here. Our Bismarck operations manager, Jim Gabel, has been with AAction since 1978 as one of Steve’s very first hires, and some of our people have been with AAction longer than Scott has been alive. When Scott builds a leadership team, he looks for trust first: people who can run an office on their own, own their decisions and never cut corners on integrity or transparency.

What makes us different

Do It Right the First Time

Scott learned it from his father’s Air Force years, shoveling the driveway and mowing the lawn as a kid: do things right the first time. Safety first. Every time. That lesson is how we train every crew.

Hands-on training

Instead of passive screen time, new hires are paired with experienced crew members from day one and taught to do things right, not just fast. Mistakes happen, but never because nobody showed you the right way.

The Mom Test

When something goes sideways, whether it’s a tough situation, a claim or a decision in the field, we ask one question: would you be comfortable with this happening in your mom’s house?

Straight talk on protection

Before you sign anything, we walk you through released value protection versus full value coverage, how claims work and what happens if something breaks. No fine print surprises.

Crews you'll know by name

The reviews we’re proudest of name a crew member. It means the crew introduced themselves at the door, ran the job like professionals and left you feeling taken care of.

“Treat every customer like it's your mom. It's in our manager meetings. It's in every conversation.”

Moving the community

Serving the People Who Gave First

Moving is one of the most stressful moments in a person’s life. The same instinct to serve that guides every job also shapes how we show up for our communities, especially here at home in Bismarck.

  • Veterans Day Thanksgiving meal. Every November we host a full Thanksgiving meal for veterans and first responders at the Elks Lodge in Bismarck. It sells out every year with hundreds of guests, and our team serves the meal.
  • Move For Hunger. We’re a Move For Hunger partner, collecting non-perishable food during moves and delivering it to local food banks.
  • Go Mini’s containers for churches. Each year we donate Go Mini’s containers to local churches as collection points for their community drives.
  • Fourth of July with the Symphony. Every Fourth of July we donate our services to the Bismarck-Mandan Symphony’s fireworks concert, transporting, setting up and tearing down the chairs, stands and orchestra equipment.
  • Shrine Circus bicycles. Bicycles are shipped to our facility, and our crew delivers them to the Shrine Circus to be given away to kids in attendance.
  • North Dakota Motor Carriers Association. We’re a member, connected to the state’s transportation industry and its advocacy work.

“I look at it as servant leadership. I'm here to work for the employees who have been so loyal to our family and our company.”

— Scott Herman, President & CEO
